- Story Text: External Affairs Minister Yeshwantrao Chavan announced on Friday (6 February) that India had recognised the MPLA, the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola, as the government of the former Portuguese territory.
He told parliament that the MPLA alone seemed committed to preserve Angola's integrity and independence and fight the "South African armed intrusion."
As Mr. Chavan addressed parliament, Hungary's Minister for Foreign Affairs Frigyes Puja, sat in the VIP gallery watching the proceedings.
The Hungarian Minister later called on Prime Minister Indira Gandhi with members of his delegation.
The Hungarians are visiting India for talks on further cooperation between the two countries.
In September last year, India's President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed paid a five-day state visit to Hungary.
