- Story Text: United States (US) Secretary of State James Baker said the status of Greek and US relations was "very much improved" after meeting on Monday (June 4) with Constantine Mitsotakis, the first Greek Prime Minister to visit Washington in 26 years.
The two discussed Greece's efforts to normalize relations with Israel, and recent draft agreements of US military bases in Greece, both of which Baker said the US strongly supported.
Baker said President George Bush and Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev discussed and territorial dispute between Greece and Turkey over Cyprus during their five-day summit and that both leaders supported efforts by United Nations Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar to find a solution to the problem. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
