Everton beat Manchester United 4-2 in a penalty shootout to reach the FA Cup final after their semi-final ended 0-0 after extra time at Wembley Stadium on Sunday (April 19).
"Well I think it's about time that this club (Everton) started winning trophies again and they don't come much bigger than the FA Cup, hopefully that will catapult us back into the big time," Everton captain Philip Neville said.
Everton will return to Wembley for the final on May 30 against Chelsea, who beat Arsenal 2-1 in Saturday's first semi-final.
"Man United are a world class team, best team in the world and to beat them today probably typifies our cup run that we've had this season, beating Liverpool, Aston Villa, Middlesborough and now Man United and now we've got a big game to come in the final," said Neville.
Defender Phil Jagielka scored the winning penalty, blasting the ball past goalkeeper Ben Foster to inflict United's first defeat in an FA Cup semi-final since 1970.
"Well I think if you listen to them shouting today, it meant a lot to them, even before we'd won, so I'm sure we won't be hearing the end of it un till obviously the final comes, hopefully we can take it one step further, because we're massively overdue a win in a cup competition,"
said Jagielka.
United manager Alex Ferguson played a largely reserve side and defeat ended the European champions' hopes of winning an unprecedented five major trophies this season.
"Obviously today we're very disappointed not to have got to the final, can't win them all, just got to dust yourself down and get on with the next game," said Manchester United captain Rio Ferdinand. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
