- Story Text: A London businessman on Tuesday (January 16) was awaiting judgement to see if he has won the right to continue using the name of Elvis Presley to market souvenirs and mementoes of the King of Rock 'n' Roll.
Sid Shaw recently reopened his challenge to the might of the Elvis Presley family estate over the rights to merchandise products bearing the name and image of the star dubbed the King of Rock 'n' Roll.
The Trade Mark Court in London on January 12 heard Sid Shaw's test case application to register Elvis's name and image to sell toiletries.
Shaw has been retailing Elvis products since 1978, and claims to have made three million pounds sterling (about 4.5 million U.S.
dollars) over the last 12 years from his shop in the East End of London, "Elvisly Yours".
But the Elvis Presley estate -- trading as Elvis Presley Enterprises -- are guarding what they say is their right to the Elvis legend.
Shaw says Elvisly Yours has become widely associated with Elvis-related products in the UK and throughout much of the world.
He says his magazine of the same title sells up to 13,000 copies an issue.
Shaw's soap and cosmetic goods are exported to countries including Sweden and Germany and even to an Elvis theme restaurant in Jerusalem.
Court observers believe the case will not be decided for at least another week. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
