- Story Text: Tight security outside of the United Nations for the first day of the General Debate at the United Nations General Assembly, with U.S. President George W. Bush and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and other world leaders expected to speak on Tuesday.
Police were in full force on Tuesday (September 25) outside the United Nations as the world body was set to host the first day of the General Debate of the General Assembly.
New York's First Avenue was closed to traffic and police had barricades set up on every corner as the U.N. was bracing for the arrival of about 80 world leaders numerous foreign ministers.
Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon arrived early to greet the dignitaries as they arrived. Some of the early arrivals included U.S. President George W.
Bush and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Bush is one of the first speakers on a list that later features Ahmadinejad, and diplomats will be watching to see if the leaders of the two bitterly hostile countries cross paths or exchange words.
But despite the United States leading efforts for more U.N. sanctions against Iran to curtail its nuclear program, Bush will only make a brief mention of Tehran in his speech, the White House said.
Bush is set to announce new U.S. sanctions against Myanmar over human rights.
Other issues expected to be the subject of speeches on Tuesday include the Palestinian issue and Iraq reconstruction. - Copyright Holder: POOL (CAN SELL)
