- Story Text: West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl said in New York on Tuesday (June 5) that Germans wanted to "grasp their sovereign right" and anchor a united Germany in NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) for the sake of European stability.
Speaking to the American-German Society, Kohl rejected Moscow's insistence that a unified Germany be neutral or non-aligned.
"We Germans want to grasp our sovereign right, which is also confirmed in the United Nations Charter and the Helsinki Final Act: We want to be members of an alliance and indeed the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation," he said.
Kohl's visit to the United States was due to include a briefing in Washington on Friday (June 8) by President George Bush on his summit last week with Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev. Kohl and Bush were expected to discuss the unification and future of Germany. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
