- Story Text: A previously unknown drawing by a young Michelangelo, which remained unrecocognised in a scrap book for generations, has been discovered and put on display at a London auction house.
The early work by the Italian master, who later unleashed his talents on the Sistine Chapel and the dome of St Peter's Basilica in Rome, was discovered in the library of Castle Howard in Yorkshire, North East England. The image in pen and brown ink of a woman in mourning clothes is one of a handful of drawings by the Renaissance master remaining in private ownership and is only the second major drawing by Michelangelo to have been discovered in the last 25 years.
The auction house said the three-quarter length "Mourning Woman" belongs to a small group of large-scale figure studies the artist is believed to have made between 1495 and 1505. It has remained in a 19th century scrapbook of undistinguished old master drawings in the library at Castle Howard, and its identity was only discovered when a Sotheby's specialist Julien Stock took a close look at the volume.
If no national collection expresses a serious interest in acquiring the "Mourning Woman" it could end up at Sotheby's Arts of the Renaisance sale in New York on January 25 next year. However, only museums or art lovers with millions to spare need apply as it its value reflects its rarity at a cool
