- Story Text: Four lads based in Southampton - alias Ruth - are hoping to break through into the big time with their new single, "Fear Of Flying" and a debut album "Harrison".
Ruth take their name from a character in the British radio soap opera "The Archers", set in a tiny rural community, which has a cult following. Ruth consists ofbrothers Matt and Ben Hales, who have been composing together since childhood and their old friends Stephen Cousins and Matt Vincent-Brown.
While their first single, "I Don't Know" received considerable exposure in a commercial on MTV in 1993, it only crept into the bottom end of the British charts following its release in 1995.
But despite their youth - they are in their early twenties - Ruth take a long view of success.
"We're not interested in being a band, or celebrities or all those things," Matt Hales told Reuters, explaining that Ruth would rather be known for their songwriting.
Brother Ben added, "It is only the beginning, and incidentally we want to be the kind of act that really matures by album five or six".
Ruth name an eclectic array of musicians as their influences - from The Beatles to Kate Bush to 16th century Italian composer Monteverdi. Ruth also admire Supergrass, whose clean-cut image and poppy rock music is not dissimilar to their own.
Ruth's new album "Harrison" is their tribute to the heroes of their generation; certain artists, musicians and cultural icons that have inspired them to develop their own musical style.
"Fear Of Flying" is out in the United Kingdom on July 21. The album will hit the record shops next month.
Ruth have just finished a tour of the United Kingdom and plan more appearances at festivals later this summer. Also on the cards is a tour of Australia and Germany, towards the end of the year. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
