- Story Text: While same people might be satisfied with being an skilled step-dancer or a dazzling fiddle player, Natalie MacMaster manages to combine the two for her energetic performances.
Brought up in a musical family in Cape Breton steeped in Scottish heritage, Natalie MacMaster began playing at a young age when her great uncle gave her a small fiddle.
Her dancing was encouraged by her mother, a well-known step dancer. She is now at the forefront of a new generation of Cape Breton musicians.
After a releasing "No Boundaries", a mainstream album which earned her a gold disc in Canada, her follow-up album returns to more traditional Celtic melodies.
Natalie has not ruled out heading back to a more modern sound, but the current album "My Roots Are Showing" gives her the opportunity to enjoy playing the less commercial, traditional fiddle music.
Natalie sometimes plays solo but can also be seen with her band of guitar, piano, bass, drums and percussion. On occasions she even fronts a full classical orchestra.
Along with her growing popularity has come a host of awards - 3 East Coast Music Awards in 1997 plus a Canadian Country Music Award for Fiddler of the Year and a Juno Award nomination.
Natalie is currently taking a couple of days out from a busy summer schedule touring Europe and appearing at folk festivals in the UK including the Cambridge Folk Festival in the UK on August 1st and 2nd. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
