- Story Text: An old Jimi Hendrix Gibson guitar sold for twenty thousand pounds on Wednesday at Bonham's London Auction House.
The auction, running for two days caters for keen collectors of anything and everything to do with rock and roll, proving that one rock star's cast-offs is one fan's treasure.
Jimi Hendrix memorabilia was flavour of the day at Bonham's Auction House on Wednesday. An acoustic nylon string guitar with the master's signature was sold for four hundred pounds. While this Gibson ES175 Sunburst, used by Jimi Hendrix on the Axis 'Bold as Love' record and "Along The Watchtower" overdubs, fetched twenty thousand pounds. It did not however manage to exceed a predicted price of forty thousand pounds.
But experts in pop memorabilia say that Hendrix items arestill a safe bet.And they say that anything by The Beatles, the Stones, Elvis Presley and Jimi Hendrix will alwayssell.
Elvis mementos, however exceeded all expectations, although the items were less valuable than the Hendrix Gibson guitar.
A rare full page lyric in Elvis Presley's hand, with the words and music credited to Del Shannon called 'Look On The Good Side' had a reserve price of between four-thousand to five-thousand pounds.
Instead the lyric, which is double mounted with a photograph of Elvis, fetched doubled that fetching eight thousand pounds, As for the acetate of Elvis that started Rock 'n' Roll -- 'That's All Right (Mama)' -- it was sold for 16-thousand five-hundred pounds. And the rest is history.
A gentleman's brush and comb set given to John Lennon by Beatles Manager, Brian Epstein, got just over two-thousand pounds. It's rumoured that Lennon kept his hashish in these compartments.
Bonham's pop and memorabilia sale had something for everyone -- the rich and the not so famous.
Psychedelic concert posters, autographs and records are at the cheaper end of the scale. And top collectors from the Hard Rock cafe, with walls to fill, snapped up the art work.
For Spice Girl fans who want to walk in the footsteps of their idols, there was even a pair of autographed boots that Geri Halliwell wore on stage.
The scuffed platforms went for more than one-thousand pounds, proving that the former Spice Girl has still got enough girl power to pull the crowds. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
