Indonesian police have begun securing the United
Nations vote counting centre in Dili as polls across the
country began sending in sealed ballot boxes.
East Timorese flocked to polling booths on Monday (August
30) for a U.N-organised ballot widely expected to lead the
impoverished territory to independence after 23 years of often
brutal Indonesian rule.
The voting was remarkable for its almost complete absence
of the violence which has plagued the former Portuguese colony
for months as pro-Jakarta militias embarked on a wave of
terror to cow those who wanted independence.
The result of the vote -- in which East Timorese have been
allowed to choose their own future after 24 years of rule by
Indonesia, is expected within the week.
The vote is a choice between independence or autonomy
within Indonesia, but most observers say the result is likely
to overwhelmingly support independence.
The ballot result must be ratified by Indonesia's top
legislative body, the People's Consultative Assembly, which is
due to convene in October.
