- Story Text: Double formula one world champion Michael Schumacher
has undergone successful surgery after breaking his right leg
in a high-speed crash on the opening lap of the British Grand
Prix.
The German was airlifted to Northampton General
Hospital on Sunday (July 11) after careering into a tyre wall
at 200 kph.
He suffered a double clean break of the lower right leg
and bruising to his chest.
Chief executive of the hospital David Wilson said on
Sunday evening: "He was assessed by the Surgical Team and
found to have sustained a straightforward fracture to the
right tibia and fibula. These injuries were reduced during a
surgical procedure which was uncomplicated. The operation was
successful and he is now recovering on the ward.We expect to
keep him in hospital overnight."
He said the hospital would make a statement at 0900 GMT on
Monday after the surgeon has had a chance to evaluate
Schumacher's condition.
The crash is expected to rule the Ferrari driver out of
action for several weeks but Wilson would not speculate when
he may be ready to return.
