France's Alain Prost in car number seven took the fastest practice time on July 20 after the first qualifying session for the British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch, scheduled for July 22. He clocked one minute 11.494 seconds at an average speed of 211.747 kilometres an hour (132.34 miles per hour), just ahead of Austrian Niki Lauda (No. 8), who finished in one minute 11.598 seconds. Both men were driving McLarens. In third place was Italy's Elio de Angelis, in a Lotus (No. 11), who recorded one minute 11.734 seconds. In forth place was Brazil's Ayrton Senna in a Toleman (No. 19), who finished in one minute 11.89 seconds, and fifth was Britain's Derek Warwick in a Renault (No. 16) in one minute 12.278 seconds. The first practice session had to be halted for an hour when Venezuelan driver Johnny Cecotto crashed at the Westfield bend after only five minutes. Cecotto, broke both ankles when he hit a barrier on only his second circuit, and had to be cut free from his Toleman. The Tyrrell team, including driver Stefan Johansson of Sweden, was given the go-ahead to take part by a court judge after team boss Ken Tyrrell appealed against a race ban following alleged fuel and ballast irregularities. The International Motor Racing Federation (FISA) had earlier suspended the team but Tyrrell won the right to take part in the British Grand Prix, despite an official FISA ban for the rest of the Grand Prix season.
