German President Richard von Weizsaecker on Tuesday (January 29) thanked families of United States (US) servicemen involved in the Gulf conflict for their dedicated to a cause which the United States and Germany shared.
Weizsaecker was speaking at a US military base in Giessen, north of Frankfurt, during a visit seen as a gesture of solidarity with Washington in the Gulf war.
Around 80,000 out of 260,000 US troops stationed in Germany have been redeployed in the Gulf.
The previous day a Jordanian-based Islamic group threatened to attack US bases in Germany in revenge for the US-led war against Iraq. "We're thinking, for example, of an American installation near Frankfurt," said Nader al-Tamini, spokesman of the radical Islamic Jihad (Holy War) Beit al-Maqdess movement.
Germany has been criticised for sending no troops to the Gulf though it is under a constitutional ban not to used German soldiers outside the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) area.
