  • Story Text: The United States retained the Coronation Cup...one of the world's top polo trophies...on Sunday (28 July) with an exciting four-three win over England. The winning goal was scored in the last seconds of the match.

    A crowd of 12-thousand, including Britain's Queen Elizabeth, watched the American team repeat their performance of last year when they also scored in the closing stages to take the trophy by a single goal.

    England started well and scored twice in the first minute, but the Americans recovered and dominated the second chukka without being able to score. The visitors scored in the third chukka from a penalty and equalised soon after with a brilliant 0 yard (metre) shot from another penalty. The Americans took the lead in the fourth chukka, but England eaualised in the fifth. England had their chances in the last chukka but it was the Americans who prossed forward to score the decisive goal in the last seconds.

    The Coronation Cup was first presented in 1911. It has been contested irregularly since. The Americans have now won it on the last four times the series has been held.
