- Story Text: The United States Ambassador to Kenya has unveiled a
memorial to those killed in the embassy bombings in Nairobi
and Dar Es Salaam in August
Ambassador Prudence Bushnell unveiled the simple
memorial, a white pole donated by Kenya's Hindu community, on
Saturday (January 30), to the more than 250 people, including
11 Americans, killed when a suicide bomber drover a truck bomb
into the U.S.embassy compound on August 7, 1998.
Bushnell was quoted on Sunday by the Nairobi-based
Sunday Standard as confirming that the building will be torn
down after engineers confirmed that it was no longer safe for
habitation.
She confirmed that Washington has purchased a building in
the industrial area of the city, along the main
Nairobi-Mombasa highway, where the embassy would be
temporarily transferred until an appropriate location is
identified.
