The United States Attorney-General, Mr. William French Smith, has been on a four-day visit to the north of Pakistan to survey the drug situation there. Mr. Smith landed by helicopter in the village of Landi Kotal and was greeted by tribal heads and elders. He also saw a contingent of the famous Khyber Rifles brigade. Mr. Smith and his wife were presented with garlands of flowers by the chiefs and then given two sheep -- ceremonially decorated. The village, which is about 16 kilometres (10 miles), from the border with Afghanistan, has been well known as a drug trading centre. Over the past three years, Pakistan has emerged as the main supplier of heroin to Western Europe and the USA. After the ceremony was finished, Mr. Smith had planned to visit a local bazaar, but he cut his visit short, after officials told him they could not guarantee his safety. Mr. Smith left after US officials with him had said they would show him opium and heroin on open sale in the shops in the market. Pakistani officials declined to comment on the reasons for curtailing Mr. Smith's visit.
