  • Story Text: India's External Affairs Minister, Mr. Sardar Swaran Singh, told delegates at the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday (26 September) that his country looks upon nuclear energy as a means to help develop its resources to the fullest extent.

    Mr. Singh reiterated his country's pledge not to develop weapons from nuclear energy, which it plans to use only for peaceful purposes.

    India conducted its first major underground nuclear test on Many 18 this year
    Mr. Singh said his country agreed that nuclear disarmament should receive the highest priority, and supported an early convening of a World Disarmament Conference.

    Reports said Mr. Singh's statement appeared to have been made in response to fears expressed by the United States Secretary of State, Dr. Henry Kissinger, UN Secretary-General, Dr. Kurt Waldheim, and others that nations with nuclear energy might be tempted to make nuclear arms.
