- Story Text: The second session of the United Nations Economic Commission for Western Asia -- embracing a dozen participating states -- opened in Beirut on Thursday (1 May).
Represented at the meeting were Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Yemen, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Syria and the United Arab Emirates. A Delegation from the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (P.L.O.) also was present.
The Conference, at the Hotel Beau Rivage, was opened by the Qatar Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Mr. Ali Ahmad Al Ansari, who is also chairman or the session.
Thursday's keynote opening speech was delivered by the Lebanese Minister for Planning, Mr. Zaki Mazboudi, who made special note of the presence of the P.L.O. Delegation.
The Commission is part of the United Nations Economic and Social Council, and held its first session last March in Doha, Qatar.
