Captain Saad al-Matouq, manager of the Kuwait Oil Tanker Company said in an interview on Sunday that the United States (US) would soon resumes its protection to Kuwait tankers transporting oil from the Gulf.
The US navy suspended its tanker convoys through the Gulf on April 18, when it clashed with the Iranian navy. The US destroyed two Iranian offshore oil platforms and sunk or damaged at least six Iranian vessels, after accusing Iran of laying mines in the Gulf. Iran said a US helicopter gunship was shot down, and vowed to defend itself against further attacks.
Saad said he did not envisage any delays in the resumption of oil tanker convoys through the Gulf. He added that he supported the US government's plan to extend its navy protection to neutral ships not flying the Stars and Stripes. During the past year Kuwaiti tankers have had the US navy's protection from Iranian attacks in the Gulf war. Saad said he hoped the US would continue to flag and protect Kuwaiti ships.
