About a thousand South Koreans attended a rally in seoul on Wednesday to protest at sales of United States cigarettes at newly-introduced cheap prices. The protesters distributed leaflets urging an end to imports of foreign cigarettes. They also burned dummy giant United States cigarette cartons. American cigarettes were sold at an average price of 1,300 wun (1.76 dollars) but prices fell to almost half that last week after tea South Korean government decide to cut traffics after pressure from Washington. The United States has demanded that Seoul should open its market wider for American products and services to help cut a trade imbalance which amounted to 9.6 billion dollars last year, Wednesday's demonstration was part of a series of sporadic protests against sales of cheap American cigarettes.
