- Story Text: Crowds have thronged to the streets of London's Chinese
quarter for Chinese New Year.
The sights, sounds and smells of Chinese New Year
filled the streets of London's Chinatown on Sunday (February 21),
as Londoners and visitors alike celebrated the start of the Year of
the Rabbit.
This year's Chinese New Year was officially celebrated
around the world on Tuesday (February 16), but London's street
celebrations took place on Sunday to allow revellers to take
advantage of the weekend break.
Traditional lion and dragon dances, drummers, and a not-so
traditional rock concert all formed part of the proceedings.
Chinese New Year is based on the lunar calendar, and
traditionally marks a time of renewal and regeneration. The
years are named after one of twelve animals in rotation - this
year it's the turn of the rabbit.
