Britain's Steve Ovett recorded the best time in the world this year in the men's 1,500 metres in Koblenz on August 6. After the race, which he won in three minutes and 33.78 seconds, Ovett announced that he would not be running in the event in the forthcoming European Championships, but would be concentrating on training for the 5,000 metres. Ovett, who won the 5,000 metres title in the Commonwealth Games in July, said he thought it would be wrong to switch back to 1,500 metres after gearing all the season's training to the 5,000 metres. Somalia's Bili Abdi Bile was second in 3.34.33 and Steve Scott of the United States (U.S.) came third in 3.35.13. Nigerian sprinter Chidi Imoh, who was forced to withdraw from the Commonwealth Games when his country boycotted them, added to his reputation by taking an easy first place in the men's 100 metres in a time of 10.20 seconds, the fastest time recorded in the stadium. Kirk Baptiste of the U.S. finished second in 10.45 with Austria's Andreas Berger coming third in 10.51. The crowd in Koblenz witnessed another record for the stadium when Peter Braun of West Germany clocked 1.44.03 to win the men's 800 metres. After Braun, came David Mack of the U.S. in 1.44.17 and Brazilian Luis Barbosa in 1.44.19. First in the women's 100 metres hurdles was Stephanie Hightower of the U.S. in 13.29 seconds, while West Germany's Edith Oker came in second at 13.34, followed by her compatriot Claudia Reidick in 13.39. Kenya's Joshua Kipkemboi won the men's 3,000 metres steeplechase in eight minutes and 14.13 seconds, narrowly beating his countrymen Samson Obwecha by four seconds. The U.S. fielded another winner when Baptiste reversed the tables in the men's 200 metres to beat the victor of the 100 metres, in a time of 20.41 seconds. Inch came in at 20.47, and West Germany's Erwin Skamrahl was third in 20.93.
