  • Story Text: United States Secretary of State Henry Kissinger appeared to be the main target of an anti-American demonstration in New Delhi, India, on Monday (12 May).

    Hundreds of demonstrators -- members of the youth wing of the Indian Communist Party -- burned an effigy of Dr. Kissinger which was earlier stuffed with firecrackers.

    The demonstrators demanded that the Americans withdraw from the rest of Asia and dismantle their bases including one on Diego Garcia, an island in the Indian Ocean.

    In a memorandum to the United States ambassador to India, the demonstrators claimed that the U.S. "imperialists" have suffered a stunning blow in Vietnam and Cambodia, and that they were now planning "to dig in elsewhere -- in South Korea and particularly in the Indian Ocean".
