- Story Text: A delegation of South West African politicians is currently visiting Britain to seek support for their claims that they are the true representatives of the territory.
In an interview in London, they denied that they were stooges of the South Africa Government.
But they were quoted as saying earlier that the South African presence was needed in their country to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
The delegation is part of a 156-strong team attending a conference on the constitutional future of their country in Windhoek, the territory's capital.
The conference, which is in recess, was called by South Africa in defiance of a United Nations order to grant immediate independence to South West Africa.
A former German colony, South West Africa was entrusted to South Africa by the now defunct League of Nations. Since then, both the United Nations General Assembly and the International Court of Justice have declared illegal South Africa's administration of the territory.
The United Nations Council for Namibia is charged with administering the territory and, together with the Organisation of African Unity, has recognised SWAPO, the South West African People's Organisation, as the only authentic representative of the territory. But South Africa has frequently refused visas for United Nations' personnel to enter South West Africa.
SYNOPSIS: A delegation to the South West Africa constitutional conference currently in recess is in Britain to seek support for their claims to be the true representatives of South West Africa. William L. Ward spoke to members of the delegation at a London news conference.
