- Story Text: Nearly 2,000 sea anglers -- including fishermen from France, Belgium and Holland -- joined competitors from throughout the United kingdom on Sunday (7 March) in the European and All England Sea Angling Championships at Folkestone, Kent.
The organisers claimed that this year's championships were the biggest ever held. Despite the strong turnout, when the cameras arrived to film the event, the fish appeared reluctant to oblige -- except for one tiny sized catch that was promptly swallowed raw by an amused French angler.
However, the organisers of the championship said that the overall event was a major success.
The new European Champion with the heaviest total weight of fish, was an Englishman, Mr. John Taylor from Lancashire. He won the Silver Challenge Rose Bowl. Mr. Taylor also won the English Championship section.
Monsieur Renaud Dentant from Belgium won the trophy for the greatest number of fish caught by any competitor. And, Monsieur Victor Vetessen won the trophy for the heaviest fish caught by a French competitor.
