- Story Text: France has criticised Rhodesia's closure of its border with Zambia, during Wednesday's (January 31) third day of debate on the issue at the United Nations Security Council.
M. Louis de Guiringaud, the chief French representative, said his country deplored Rhodesia's action and the serious incidents which accompanied it, involving loss of life. He also paid tribute to the courage of the Zambian people in refusing to take advantage of the Rhodesians' offer to make copper exports through Rhodesia an exception to the border closure.
The Council was hearing a Zambian complaint that Rhodesia had carried out numerous acts of subversion and sabotage in Zambian territory.
Australia and the United States also criticised Rhodesia's actions during Wednesday's hearing. Film coverage of the highlights of their ambassadors' speeches is contained in production number 1077/73, also serviced from London on Thursday (February 1).

But the tightening of sanctions against Rhodesia should prove unnecessary, continued Monsieur Guiringaud. For Zambia's determination to export and import through other neighbouring countries should reduce the hard currency earning of Rhodesia, thus increasing its economic difficulties.
