- Story Text: The Government of Pakistan has asked Britain to return the Koh-I-Noor diamond, which is generally acknowledged to be the finest diamond in the world. It is now among the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London as part of the Queen Consort's crown.
SYNOPSIS: In 1937 the Royal Jewellers in London used the thousand year-old diamond as the central stone in the Queen Consort's crown which was to be worn by the Duchess of York at the coronation of her husband when he became King George the Sixth. The name Koh-i-Noor means "mountain of light", and the diamond was first placed among the Crown Jewels of Queen Victoria after Britain annexed the Punjab in 1849.
Before then it had been in the possession at one time or another of some of the noblest houses on the Indian sub-continent. Some experts believe it was originally taken by Sultan Alauddin Khilgi in 1304 from the Indian Raja of Malwa. In 1739 it was captured by Nadir Shah of Persia when he sacked Delhi, but over the next century it found its way back to India.
