- Story Text: It was the women's singles quarter finals at Britain's Wimbledon tennis championships on Monday (28 June). First seed Chris Evert of the United States played Russia's Olga Morozova and second seeded Evonne Goolagong of Australia played Rosie Casals of the United States.
SYNOPSIS: First seed Miss. Evert, here serving, had reached the semi final every years she had competed at Wimbledon. Miss. Morozova did her best to try to break that enviable record, but she found Miss. Evert's play remorseless.
The first set went to Miss. Evert six-three.
The Russian girl could not maintain her challenge in the second set. Five games to love down, she served to save the match. The first serve was a fault so this was her last chance.
Miss. Evert, who said afterwards that this has been her easiest Wimbledon so far, will play Czechoslovakia's Martina Navratilova in the semi final.
Second seed Evonne Goolagong faced American Rosie Casals, nearest the camera, in her quarter final. Evonne Goolagong never found it easy to break Miss. Casals' service in the first set but she persevered, and sometimes the Australian girl had a little luck.
Evonne Goolagong's winning return hit the net and bounced over. It helped her win the first set seven-five.
The humid atmosphere of Britain's hottest spell of weather since records began in 1940, may have contributed to Miss. Casals' downfall in the second set. Certainly Evonne Goolagong met less resistance, winning 6-3.
Evonne Goolagong serves for match point and a semi-final place against Britain's Miss. Virginia Wade.
