  • Story Text: Top seed Jimmy Connors had little trouble in winning his opening match in the Grand Prix tennis tournament in London on Monday (15 November). Connors beat fellow U.S. player Mike Estep in straight sets 6-1, 6-3.

    SYNOPSIS: A crowd of just 200 saw Connors win in lazy style at Wembley's Empire Pool. The match lasted just 50 minutes and the number one seed never moved into top gear. He wrapped up the first set with a love service game.

    He raced through the second to lead 5-1 before his concentration eased and Estep fought back.

    This tournament is worth 125,000 U.S. dollars and many believe Connors is sure to win it. He allowed Estep to graft back to 3-5 in the second set before he pulled his game back together.

    In the final game he attacked Estep's service and allowed his opponent no chance to get to the net. It was an impressive although expected performance from the 1974 Wimbledon champion.
