- Story Text: Brazilian President, Ernesto Geisel, said in London on Wednesday (5 May) that his country would send a mission to Britain to discuss cooperation for Brazilian offshore oil development with the British National Oil Corporation (BNOC).
The announcement came in a statement from Number 10 Downing Street where the Brazilian leader and Prime Minister, James Callaghan held two hours of talks on the second day of the President's four-day state visit.
The statement pointed out that Britain had a great deal to offer in terms of expertise in offshore oil technology and looked forward to contributing to Brazilian expansion in that field.
Later, near London's Guildhall 700 placard-waving demonstrators chanted "Out Geisel" and "Brazilian butcher go home" for one hour as the Brazilian President attended the Lord Mayor's banquet in his honour.
Surrounded by a phalanx of police and crammed into a barricaded side street, the protesters jeered and booed at every guest walking to the banquet.
But they only had a brief glimpse - and a few seconds to boo- General Geisel as he past in a black limousine on his way to the Guildhall.
