- Story Text: == NO ACCESS NORTH AMERICA == A storm lying off the California coast on Friday (February 14) was expected to exacerbate flooding in the Los Angeles area which has already killed seven people and caused damage estimated at 7.6 million United States dollars.
The worst storms to hit southern California in a century have left thousands of homes and businesses without power. Hundreds of evacuees have sheltered in Red Cross centres.
Mud slides and flooding have shut down most of the region's roads and highways and caused hundreds of road accidents.
Although some areas of southern California have had more than 30 centimetres (one foot) of rain since Sunday (February 9), the storms have done little to end a severe drought entering its sixth year. Most of the rain has run off into the Pacific Ocean.
