- Story Text: Teams of United Nations (UN) cartographers and experts
have been working along the border verifying whether the
Israeli troop withdrawal from south Lebanon last week was
complete.
United Nations peacekeeping force in south Lebanon have
been checking since Friday (May 26) whether Israel has
withdrawn to international borders.
The experts are expected to finish their work on the
Israeli side of the border by Wednesday (May 31). They will
then take their ground work to the Lebanese side.
U.N. verification is a key condition set by Lebanon before
deploying its troops in the volatile region.
Syria, which has 35,000 troops in Lebanon, has not said
whether it will endorse U.N. plans for border security.
Political analysts have voiced fears that the euphoria
that followed Israel's pullout could turn sour if the Lebanese
government does not move quickly to fill the power vacuum.
The U.N. timetable stipulates U.N. verification of
Israel's full withdrawal and providing of security
arrangements in the area before the Lebanese government can
restore its authority there.
4,500 strong U.N. peacekeeping force is due to follow up
on the work of cartographers and experts in the volatile
border region left largely to its own devices since the
Israeli pullout.
