- Story Text: Several African leaders are presently attending the conference of Zambia's ruling United National Independence Party in Mulungushi, North of the capital, Lusaka. The conference began on 14 August, and will continue until August 20.
In Mulungushi for the conference were President Nyerere of Tanzania, President Obote of Uganda and vice-president Daniel Arap Moi of Kenya.
The conference is being held under the chairmanship of President Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia. The three African leaders are attending the conference at the personal invitation of Dr. Kaunda.
The visiting statement as well as the 5,000 delegates to the five-day meeting are all staying at Mulungushi, a natural bush emphitheatre. During their visit the presidents are living in specially built grass and daub cottages.
The major object of the conference has been the election of high-ranking party office holders. President Kaunda has already been returned unopposed as UNIP president. But surprise results in the lower echelons could result in a full government re-shuffle by Dr. Kaunda.
I am Smith's Rhodesian regime has already come in for scathing attack from various speakers. President Nyerere of Tanzania claimed yesterday (Wednesday) that Mr. Smith's ambition was to create chaos in Zambia.
The Smith regime was also happy that African was killing African in Nigeria, Dr. Nyerere claimed.
During the conference delegates have been entertained by dancers and drummers from rural areas of Zambia.
