- Story Text: American swimmers broke a total of five world swimming records and helped the United States to beat Britain by 52 points to 68 in their one-day match at the Crystal Palace in London today (Saturday).
Miss Catie Ball, a 15-year-old from Jackson, Florida led the record breaking spree with two and she also shared in the medley team's triumph. Her first record came in the women's 220 yards breast stroke which she won in two minutes 46.9 seconds, clipping eight tenths of a second of the existing record.
Miss Ball gained her second record - and her fourth altogether - when making a solo swim for the 110 yards.
She clocked one minute 17 seconds to lower American Susan Jones' record set in Vancouver in August 1966 by 1.3 seconds.
Mark Spitz, 17, from Santa Clara, succeeded with his solo assault on the men's 110 yards butterfly. He skimmed through the water and clocked 56.3 seconds.
The old record of 58.1 was set by Canadian Dan Sherry, at Blackpool, England, in August 1965. Spitz, prior to today's achievement, had broken three world records this year.
