- Story Text: Kipchoge Keino of Kenya ran the second fastest mile time of his career when won the Morley mile in 3 minutes 53.8 at the White City stadium in London today.
Keino would have gone close to Jim Ryun's world time of 3 mins. 51.1 if there had been anybody to pace him for the last 300 yards. But he burned off the rest of the field in the last lap and had to run on his own.
The early pace was very fast and when the half-mile was gone through at 1.56.9, Keino had an excellent chance to break Ryun's record. But the rest of the field were unable to extend the Kenyan policeman for the rest of the race. Keino's win was his third in a row in the Morley mile. His time was only four tenths of a second outside his United Kingdom allcomers record, set in the same race last year. The Kenyan also set a UK record for 1,500 metres while completing the mile. Keino's time was 3 minutes 36.7, and his best ever over the metric mile.
