- Story Text: United States (U.S.) troops reinforced their positions around the airport in Tuzla, central Bosnia-Herzegovina on Thursday (December 21).
General William Nash, commander of United States (U.S.) forces in Bosnia, said "before any heavy equipment crosses the River Sava we want to make sure that the proper arrangements are done because once you come across the river we've got a lot of work to do, so we are going to bring the right people." "We also have facilities to make sure they are ready. We'll come across the river before too long," he said.
Hours after taking over the Bosnia peacekeeping operation from the United Nations, Nash had been one of two U.S. commanders demonstrating their power by driving across a volatile frontline on the Croatian-Bosnian border on Wednesday.
Nash drove from Moslem-held Tuzla to the Croat-held Orasje pocket down the main road cutting across the Serb corridor.
The highway, vital for the isolated Tuzla region, had not been used by anyone, including the U.N., since October 1992, when the former Yugoslav army cut the narrow northern strip of land connecting Serb territories in the east and west with Serbia.
On the Croatian side, Nash's rear commander, Brigadier-General Patrick O'Neal, boarded a commercial ferry across the river Sava to meet him in the small town of Orasje, the only part of northern Bosnia held by the Bosnian Croats and which the Serbs tried to crush for 43 months in vain.
