  • Story Text: Britain's John Lloyd gave third seeded Raul Ramirez of Mexico plenty of problems before severe cramp forced him to retire during their Commercial Union Grand prix tennis match in London on Tuesday (16 November). At the finish of the hard hitting match, which was full of long rallies, Ramirez was ahead 6-3, 6-7, 4-2.

    SYNOPSIS: Ramirez, who is the points leader in the Commercial Union Grand Prix competition, set the early pace. He outplayed Lloyd during several baseline rallies.

    The second set was a different matter. Lloyd's enthusiastic chasing and clever volleying forced Ramirez into error. The set eventually began to go Lloyd's way.

    Lloyd held set point on Ramirez' service at 6-5, but the Mexican fought back to retain his service game.

    With the score at six all the tie breaker went to Lloyd giving him the second set 7-6.

    Lloyd continued to battle at the start of the third set winning two early games.

    However, he began to feel the cramps in his left leg and Ramirez was able to gain control again, despite some determined play by his opponent.

    The cramps became too severe for Lloyd and he retired with the score in the third set at 4-2 to Ramirez.
