- Story Text: In the Delta of the Nile thousands of acres of desert land have been reclaimed and turned into a flourishing State farm. Helped by the water control provided by the Aswan High Dam, irrigation has been taken to once arid areas which now bear healthy crops and livestock. A contract has been signed to export vegetables to Europe and it is expected that by 1975 the farm will be making a useful profit for the State. A VISNEWS staff cameraman toured the farm at the weekend.
SYNOPSIS: This is a State farm in the Nile Delta. A few years ago it was desert. Now, it produces healthy crops and this month it will be exporting vegetables and flowers to France and Italy.
The secret is irrigation from the Nubaria canal. The water it brings results in useful crops of alfalfa lucerne.
More than 30,000 head of cattle are kept, mainly for milk. The three sections of the farm are named Nasser, Revolution and Friendship. The project was started in 1952 after the monarchy was overthrown.
Vineyards occupy much of the northern section of the farm because of the soil's high calcium content. The workers are proud of their grapes and that Egypt is producing its own wine. The vintage has been made possible by diverting the waters of the branch of the river known as the Rosetta Nile.
The workers have schools and hospitals and give thanks in their own mosque. The farm is 90 per cent self-supporting and should be making a handsome profit by 1975.
