- Story Text: The United Nations has said local Serb and ethnic
Albanian leaders in the town of Mitrovica in Kosovo have
agreed to postpone the signing of a peace deal for the divided
town.
Tension remains high in the town.On Thursday (July 22), a
Serb house was in flames.Ethnic Albanians said they had set
it alight to prevent its owners returning.
French KFOR soldiers were deployed at the bridge
dividing the town, checking people's cars and documents.
UN regional administrator for Mitrovica Sir Martin Garrod
said local leaders wanted to extend the agreement to include
an expression of a wish for both sides to live in peace
together.Anyone who broke the agreement would have sanctions
imposed on them, he added.
But as he was speaking, a Serb house nearby was in flames.
Ethnic Albanian children threw stones as a man tried in vain
to extinguish the blaze with a garden hose.By the time the
fire brigade arrived the roof had burnt out.
