- Story Text: Greek employees from the United States' air base at Hellinikon, near Athens, started a hunger strike outside the main gates on Monday (9 June) -- protesting against their dismissal from the base where they are being replaced by American personnel.
Seventy dismissed employees are involved in the strike. But their demonstration is getting personal support from workers on other U.S. bases and from student organisations.
Part of their discontent is aimed against the Greek Government, for not imposing national labour regulations on the bases. They are also annoyed that Hellinikon is being used for American U-2 spy 'planes -- a practice that has already annoyed the political opposition in Greece, who fear that aircraft used to spy on Greece's neighbours could cause international complications.
