  • Story Text: A three-day meeting between experts of the Trans-African Highway Bureau and representatives of eight industrialised nations ended in Addis Ababa on Friday (October 1) with strong support for the proposed highway.

    The meeting was convened by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa to seek financial support for the highway, which would link Kenya's port of Mombasa in the East with the Nigerian capital, Lagos on the West Coast. The Highway would traverse Uganda, Congo (Kinshasa), the Central African Republic and Cameroon.

    SYNOPSIS: A three-day meeting to discuss the Trans-African Highway project opened in the Africa Hall, Addis Ababa, on Wednesday. the meeting was convened by this United Nations Economic Commission for Africa to seek financial support for the Highway, which would link Kenya's port of Mombasa in the East with the Nigerian capital of Lagos, on the West Coast.

    The meeting was called to enable experts of the Trans-African Highway Bureau to confer with representatives of eight industrialized nations.

    The Highway would traverse Uganda, Congo-Kinshasa, the Central African Republic and Cameroon.

    Britain, Belgium, Holland and France promised technical assistance to countries through which the Highway will pass. West Germany and Italy said they wanted more time to see how best they could help. Japan and the United States also attended the meeting.
