- Story Text: Foreign journalists criticised the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR) in Sarajevo on Tuesday (November 1), accusing the agency of witholding information.
In a heated exchange at the daily news conference, reporters told UNPROFOR members that the media were not being properly briefed on shelling incidents in Brasnica near the war-torn city, nor about NATO overflights.
CNN correspondent Jackie Shymanski asked why the mortar tracking system had not been able to pick up explosions. She said that, for three days, the number of explosions did not tally with the count given by UNPROFOR.
Newsweek's Joel Brand said the United Nations did not know where the fire was coming from.
Reuter journalist Kurt Schork said that the UNPROFOR briefing is losing credibility.
UNPROFOR spokesmen Major Herve Gourmelon and Lieutenant-Colonel Tim Spicer denied that UNPROFOR was withholding information.
Spicer said that discrepancies can occur when observers report hearing the same explosions, thereby inaccurately boosting the tallies.
