- Story Text: Egypt's acting Foreign Minister Mr. Ismail Fahmy, met in Cairo on Thursday (25 October 1973) with the Commander of the United Nations peace-keeping force in the Middle East, General Ensio Silasvuo of Finland. The meeting took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, within hours after the Security Council decided to set up the force. Egypt had welcomed the resolution, though a spokesman pointed out that Egypt had originally demanded that the force be composed of soviet and United States troops.
Mr. Fahmy had made a specific request to United Nations Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim to meet General Silasvuo, who has been stationed permanently in Jerusalem. No details were available of the topics of discussion.
The first detachment of the peace-keeping force, 30 soldiers from General Silasvuo's own country, Finland, arrived in Cairo from Cyprus on the day after the meeting (Friday, 26 October, 1973).
