  • Story Text: In his first speech to the current session of the United Nation, on Tuesday (2 October) the Deputy Foreign Minister of The People's Republic of China, Chiao Kuan Hua, levelled a new attack on the policies of the Soviet Union.

    In his policy address to the General Assembly, Mr. Chiao said "what the Soviet Union practised was not internationalism, but great power chauvinism, national egoism and territorial expansionism.

    In his survey of the international situation, the Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister said Soviet-United States rivalry was worldwide and had created "a travesty of peaceful coexistence." He went on to attack the 1972 Soviet-U.S. agreement on the prevention of nuclear war as "a mere scrap of paper." He said it allowed interference in other nations' affairs without providing adequate safeguards against the eventual use of nuclear weapons."
    "China absolutely till not go begging for nuclear protection from any country, nor is she afraid of a nuclear threat from any country", he added.

    SYNOPSIS: At the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, delegates from the one hundred and thirty-five member states gathered to hear the first address of the current session by the representative of The People's Republic of China, Chiao Kuan Hua.

    Mr. Chiao, China's Deputy Foreign Minister, levelled a new attack against the Soviet Union in his survey of the international situation. He said that "what the Soviet Union practised was not internationalism, national egoism and territorial expansionism."
    The Chinese representative also levelled attacks on the United States for its role in Indochina, and for the Soviet-U.S. rivalry which he said had created "a travesty of peaceful coexistence."
    Mr. Chiao also attacked the 1972 Soviet-U.S. agreement on the prevention of nuclear was as "a mere scrap of paper." He said it allowed interference in other nations' affairs without providing adequate safeguards against the eventual use of nuclear weapons. But Mr. Chiao emphasised, China absolutely would "not go begging for nuclear protection from any country, nor is she afraid of a nuclear threat from any country."
