- Story Text: A rare Pablo Picasso "blue period" painting sold for 29.1 million United States (U.S.) dollars at Sotheby's auction house on Monday (May 8).
The sale earned the title of the most expensive price for an auctioned painting in five years.
Picasso's 1903 portrait of Angel Fernandez de Soto, part of the collection of Donald and Jean Stralem, had an estimated price of 10 to 15 million U.S. dollars, Sotheby's said. The record price is expected to renew confidence in the art market, which has been in a slump since 1990.
