- Story Text: United States (U.S.) President Clinton said on Monday (February 21) that Bosnian Serbs were in "effective compliance" with NATO's demand to withdrawal their heavy weapons from around Sarajevo but said any violation would bring a "certain and swift" response from the West.
Clinton said the West intends "to remain vigilant" by monitoring the Sarajevo area. He added: "Any shelling of Sarajevo or the appearance of heavy weapons in the exclusion zone, will bring a certain and swift response from the U.N and NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation).
Bosnian Prime Minister Haris Silajdzic earlier told reporters that he believed that events in Sarajevo were the "first step towards peace." He added that the NATO threat had restored the "balance of power" in Bosnia such that his government would be looking for a compromise agreement in the next round of peace negotiations.
Siladjdzic was speaking after meeting U.S. Secretary of State Warren Christopher to work out ways of using the Sarajevo ceasefire as a model for other areas of Bosnia.
