- Story Text: Thousands of fans welcomed English soccer club Manchester United back home on Sunday (May 12) after they became the first side to complete the English League and Cup double twice.
Manchester United's 1-0 win over Liverpool in the Football Association (FA) Cup Final at Wembley on Saturday (May 11) following on from clinching the Premiership League title the previous Sunday (May 5), gave them their second double in three seasons, both under the guidance of manager Alex Ferguson.
The only goal of a largely disappointing match at Wembley was scored by Frenchman Eric Cantona with five minutes to play when the United skipper volleyed home from the edge of the penalty box.
Cantona, England's footballer of the year, also made history by becoming the first foreign player to captain an English Cup-winning side.
United have now won the F.A. Cup a record nine times.
In the previous 106 years in English soccer the double had only been won five times, with Liverpool in 1986 being the last club other than United to do it.
