  • Story Text: A high-powered United States (U.S.) delegation led by President Bill Clinton's national security adviser Anthony Lake has arrived in Britain for urgent talks on the conflict in the former Yugoslavia.

    The delegation was on Thursday (August 10) due to meet officials from Britain's Foreign Office, Ministry of Defence, Downing Street and other key departments amid disagreement over the validity of Croatia's offensive to recapture Krajina.

    "They are keen to hear our views on how to move forward the peace process," said a British official. "Obviously, they are coming with some new thinking of their own." Divisions between Britain and the United States emerged this week with British Defence Secretary Michael Portillo accusing Croatia of mass ethnic cleansing.

    But the United States firmly denies the accusation and believes the Croatian victory might prove positive by providing the opportunity to negotiate a settlement across the region.
