- Story Text: The Bosnian army fired at a French United Nations (U.N.) helicopter on Thursday (December 14), hitting it with four small arms rounds while it was searching for government soldiers lost south of Sarajevo.
U.N. spokesman Alexander Ivanko said the helicopter was flying around 10km (6 miles) south of Sarajevo, deep inside territory controlled by the Bosnian army, when the incident occurred -- on the day a Bosnia peace was sealed in Paris.
One bullet went through the crew's map, a second hit the windshield and two more hit the fuselage. It was also thought, but not yet confirmed, that an anti-aircraft missile had been fired at the helicopter.
The French were flying on a mission requested by the Bosnian army itself to help them search for colleagues lost in the Treskavica mountains, which have been blanketed by heavy snowfalls in the last two days.
The extent of the damage to the helicopter was being investigated at Sarajevo airport.
Another U.N. spokesman said the French commander of Sector Sarajevo was taking up the incident directly with the Bosnian army.
